The true cost of owning a car includes loan payments, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, registration, parking, and depreciation. For many drivers, depreciation and insurance together can exceed fuel costs. A complete model converts all costs to monthly, annual, and 5-year totals and then estimates cost per mile.
Add your full annual ownership costs and divide by annual miles driven. If your 5-year total cost is $75,000 and you drive 12,000 miles per year, your cost per mile is about $1.25. This is often much higher than fuel-only estimates because fixed costs are significant.
Commonly missed costs include maintenance (often around 1% of home value annually), repairs, HOA dues, utility differences, closing costs on purchase, and selling costs including agent fees. These can materially increase your effective monthly ownership cost beyond principal and interest.
