  • Splitting a $200 purchase into 4 interest-free BNPL payments costs $200 in total — $50 per installment, the same as paying in full.

  • A $4 flat fee on a $200 BNPL plan paid in 4 installments brings the total to $204 and is equivalent to about 17.3% APR, because the fee is charged over roughly six weeks.

  • A single $7 late fee on a $200 pay-in-4 BNPL plan is equivalent to about 30.3% APR — more than the 17.3% APR of a $4 service fee on the same purchase.

  • Financing a purchase of $800 over 12 monthly BNPL payments at 29.99% APR costs $935.83 in total — $135.83 of interest on top of the price, at $77.99 a payment.

  • The same $4 BNPL fee costs more the shorter the plan: on a $200 purchase it works out to about 17.3% APR across 4 payments but about 4.7% APR across 12.

Frequently asked questions

Is BNPL interest-free?

Many "pay in 4" options (Klarna, Afterpay) are interest-free with no fee if you pay on time. Longer plans (6, 12 months) through Affirm or Klarna Financing often charge APR. Always check the terms before you buy.

What is the real cost of buy now pay later?

If interest-free with no fee: same as paying cash. With a flat fee: add the fee to the purchase price. With APR: use the calculator to see total interest. A single $7 late fee on a $200 pay-in-4 plan is equivalent to about 30.3% APR — pay on time.

BNPL vs credit card: which is cheaper?

Interest-free BNPL (pay in 4, no fee) beats a credit card if you would carry a balance. If you pay the card in full each month, the card may offer rewards. BNPL with APR is similar to a credit card — compare rates.

Does BNPL affect my credit score?

Some BNPL providers report to credit bureaus; missed payments can hurt your score. "Pay in 4" often does not report. Longer Affirm/Klarna Financing loans typically do. Check the provider's policy.
