Taking a single Skilled Worker from a first UK visa to British citizenship costs £12,425.50 in Home Office fees and immigration health surcharge, on a five-year certificate of sponsorship applied for from outside the UK — a 6-year journey.
On a five-year UK Skilled Worker visa the immigration health surcharge, not the visa fee, is the largest single cost: £5,692.50 of surcharge against a £1,618 visa application fee — 3.5 times as much.
A five-year UK certificate of sponsorship grants five years and 14 days of permission, and because the health surcharge rounds a part-year up, those 14 days cost an extra £517.50 per adult: the journey total rises from £11,908 to £12,425.50.
Settlement in the UK costs £3,226 against a published Home Office processing cost of £310 in the 8 April 2026 fees and unit costs table — a markup of £2,916, or 10.4 times cost. A family of four on a five-year UK Skilled Worker route pays £43,264 to reach four British citizenships, because there is no family discount at any stage — every visa fee, settlement fee and health surcharge multiplies per person — and once the employer's sponsorship costs are added the sponsorship totals £50,389.
A five-year UK sponsorship on the Health and Care Worker rate costs a single applicant £5,743 to reach British citizenship, against £11,908 on the standard Skilled Worker rate — a saving of £6,165, of which 84% comes from the health surcharge exemption rather than from the lower visa fee.
Every application fee is the "Fee from 8 April 2026" column of the Home Office immigration and nationality fee table, made by The Immigration, Nationality and Passports (Fees) (Amendment) Regulations 2026 (SI 2026/311). In force from 9:00 a.m. on 8 April 2026 (fee table last updated 18 March 2026).
UK fees are not on an annual cycle. They changed on ten separate dates in the two years to April 2026 — the pattern is a main uplift in early April plus ad-hoc changes in between. Fees are capped by statutory maxima in a Fees Order, but can be moved within those maxima at any time. This page is therefore re-verified quarterly, and every figure is dated: last verified 2026-08-01.
The surcharge is £1,035 per adult per year and £776 at the reduced rate that applies to anyone under 18 at the date of application, to students and their dependants, and on the Youth Mobility Scheme. It is charged on the leave granted rather than the leave applied for, and paid in full up front.
Part-years are rounded: six months or less costs half a year (nothing at all if the application is made from outside the UK), and anything longer rounds up to a full year. That is why a two-year-nine-month partner grant is charged three full years — £3,105 for two years and nine months of cover.
Permission on the Skilled Worker route runs to 14 days after the certificate end date. Those days are a part-year, so a five-year certificate is charged five and a half years of surcharge: £5,692.50 rather than £5,175. The calculator lets you switch that off, but the default is what the rules actually grant.
The surcharge is set by separate health-charge regulations, not by the April 2026 fee instrument, and was last uprated on 2024-02-06. It is the biggest line for most applicants and the component most likely to rise next.
The Home Office publishes an estimated unit cost for each fee — its own estimate of what delivering the service costs, including direct costs, overheads, depreciation and cost of capital. On the worked example the applicant pays £6,733 in fees that have a published unit cost, against £917 of published cost: a markup of £5,816, or 7.34 times cost.
Settlement is the sharpest single case: £3,226 against £310. A widely-repeated comparison pairs the current £3,226 fee with a £523 processing cost — that is a 2025 figure. The published unit cost has been restated repeatedly: 10 April 2024 £646, 9 April 2025 £523, 1 July 2025 £523, 11 November 2025 £523, 8 April 2026 £310. Pairing the new fee with the old cost understates the gap.
The Home Office's own note says unit costs "may be influenced by changes in the way that applications in certain routes are processed from year to year", so these movements are methodology restatements and should not be read as processing getting cheaper. The health surcharge and the Immigration Skills Charge have no published unit cost at all — neither is a fee for a service — so neither ever appears in a markup here.
The English test is not a Home Office fee. gov.uk lists five approved providers but publishes no price; they set their own and it varies by centre and country. It is an editable input here, defaulting to a UK-observed range of £150–£195, and it is excluded from every markup figure. Holders of a degree taught in English can instead pay the statutory £210 Ecctis assessment.
Biometric residence permits no longer exist and eVisas are free, so there is no card fee, no eVisa fee and no charge for core biometric enrolment — those are all £0 and are not padded into the total. Optional commercial add-ons at visa application centres (premium appointments, document scanning, passport retention) are set by commercial partners, vary from roughly £75 to £300, and are not included because no fixed figure exists.
A British passport is not an immigration fee. Naturalisation plus the mandatory £130 ceremony reaches British citizenship; the passport itself is charged under separate passport fees regulations and is not in these totals.
Earned settlement. Closed consultation — it closed on 12 February 2026 with more than 200,000 responses and, as at 1 August 2026, no government response has been published and nothing has been implemented. The five-year route remains fully in force. The consultation proposed raising the baseline settlement qualifying period from five years to ten, and to fifteen for Skilled Workers in roles below RQF 6, plus a no-recourse-to-public-funds condition at settlement. If implemented, the timeline on this page would roughly double and add further extension fees and years of health surcharge.

£7,310.50 on the worked example. The visa fee and the entire health surcharge for the whole period of leave are both payable in full at the application — the surcharge is not spread over the years it covers. That single bill, not the £12,425.50 lifetime total, is what most people actually have to find first, which is why this calculator prices the gap between it and what you have saved.

No — it costs five and a half. Permission on the Skilled Worker route runs to 14 days after the certificate end date, and the surcharge rules charge half a year for any part-year of six months or less. Those 14 days therefore add £517.50 per adult, taking the journey from £11,908 to £12,425.50. The calculator defaults to the figure the rules actually produce and lets you switch to clean years for comparison.

£14,428.50 for a partner of a British citizen entering from abroad, including one B1 English test at £150. That is £2,064 for entry clearance, £1,407 for the extension, three full years of surcharge on the 33-month first grant plus £2,587.50 on the 30-month second, then settlement, the test and naturalisation. Taking B1 once at the start rather than A1, then A2, then B1 saves the cost of two tests.
The English test, because no government sets its price — it is an editable input, excluded from every markup figure. Optional visa-application-centre extras such as premium appointments and document scanning, because commercial partners price those. The British passport itself, which is charged under separate passport fees regulations. Biometric residence permits and eVisas are genuinely £0 — BRPs are no longer issued and creating a UKVI account is free — so nothing is padded in for them.
