Frequently asked questions

What is the true cost of owning a car?

The true cost of owning a car includes loan payments, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, registration, parking, and depreciation. For many drivers, depreciation and insurance together can exceed fuel costs. A complete model converts all costs to monthly, annual, and 5-year totals and then estimates cost per mile.

How do I estimate cost per mile for my car?

Add your full annual ownership costs and divide by annual miles driven. If your 5-year total cost is $75,000 and you drive 12,000 miles per year, your cost per mile is about $1.25. This is often much higher than fuel-only estimates because fixed costs are significant.

What hidden costs of homeownership are usually missed?

Commonly missed costs include maintenance (often around 1% of home value annually), repairs, HOA dues, utility differences, closing costs on purchase, and selling costs including agent fees. These can materially increase your effective monthly ownership cost beyond principal and interest.

Is buying a house always cheaper than renting long term?

Not always. Long-term outcomes depend on mortgage rate, taxes, maintenance, transaction costs, and time horizon. In high-rate or short-hold scenarios, total ownership costs can exceed expectations. Modeling all costs, not just payment, gives a clearer answer for your situation.
