Calcula el tamaño del hogar tal como lo cuenta el Formulario I-864, el ingreso que debe alcanzarse y, si no llegas, exactamente cuánto falta y qué cubre esa diferencia.

A U.S. citizen sponsoring a spouse, with one child under 21 at home, has a household of 3 — so the 125% figure is $34,150. On $28,000 of total income that is $6,150 a year short, or $512.50 a month. Because the intending immigrant is the spouse of a U.S. citizen, the gap can be covered with $18,450 of combined net assets — three times the shortfall, rather than the $30,750 that the usual 5x multiplier would require.

Sponsoring a spouse on Form I-864 takes a household income of $27,050 in the 48 contiguous states — the 125% figure for a household of two on the USCIS Form I-864P table effective 1 March 2026.
Every additional person in the sponsor's household raises the requirement by $7,100 in the contiguous states: $34,150 for a household of three, $41,250 for four and $69,650 for eight.
A sponsor on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces petitioning a spouse or child is measured against 100% of the poverty guidelines instead of 125% — $33,000 rather than $41,250 for a household of four, a difference of $8,250.
Alaska and Hawaii have their own I-864P tables: a household of four needs $51,563 in Alaska and $47,438 in Hawaii, against $41,250 in the 48 contiguous states.
A sponsor earning $28,000 with a household of three falls $6,150 a year short of the $34,150 requirement — $512.50 a month — and can cover that gap with $18,450 in combined net assets, because the spouse of a U.S. citizen is held to 3x the shortfall rather than the usual 5x ($30,750).
The Form I-864P figures in force from 1 March 2026 come from the HHS poverty guidelines published on 15 January 2026: 8 CFR 213a.1 has USCIS start using new guidelines on the first day of the second month after they appear in the Federal Register, so this table governs affidavits until 28 February 2027. (USCIS Form I-864P, 91 FR 1797, FR Doc. 2026-00755)
The figure a sponsor has to meet is not a single national number. It comes from Form I-864P, the poverty-guideline table USCIS publishes for affidavits of support, and it depends on two things: how many people are in the sponsor's household as the form counts them, and which column applies. The edition used here is in force for 1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027.
Part 5 of Form I-864 adds seven items and 8 CFR 213a.1 lays down one master rule: no individual is counted more than once. The sponsor is always exactly one. The sponsor's spouse is counted unless the spouse is the person being sponsored — the most common error on the form, and the one that turns a household of two into a household of three and the requirement from $27,050 into $34,150. Children under 21, anyone claimed as a dependent on the most recent federal return, and immigrants previously sponsored on an I-864 whose obligation has not ended all count, wherever they live.
Most sponsors are measured at 125% of the poverty guidelines. The 100% column applies only where the sponsor is on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, other than active duty for training, and the intending immigrant is that sponsor's own spouse or child. For a household of four in the contiguous states that is the difference between $41,250 and $33,000. Above household size eight, the published increment is added for each additional person — $7,100 in the contiguous states — which is exactly what the form instructs.
Household income is the sponsor's total income line from the most recent federal return, plus the income of anyone counted in the household who has signed Form I-864A. Only U.S. federal returns count. Meeting the figure exactly is enough — the test is “meets or exceeds”. Where income falls short, assets are counted at five times the gap, three times for the spouse or adult child of a U.S. citizen, and once for the orphan case that acquires citizenship under INA 320. Only net value counts, and only assets that can be converted to cash within a year without considerable hardship.
Counting a household member's income cuts both ways: that person must also be added to the household size, which raises the requirement. A sponsor who adds a relative earning enough to clear the old figure may find the new figure has moved as well — the calculator re-runs both sides rather than only adding the income.
The controlling table is the one in effect when the intending immigrant filed the application for an immigrant visa or adjustment of status, not the date the affidavit is signed. This edition took effect on 1 March 2026 and is superseded on 1 March 2027. It derives from the HHS poverty guidelines published on 15 January 2026 (91 FR 1797, FR Doc. 2026-00755); 8 CFR 213a.1 delays USCIS adoption to the first day of the second month after publication, which is why the January HHS figures and the I-864 figures disagree for six weeks every year.
Cifras verificadas el 2026-08-01; la tabla se aplica a 1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027.
On the Form I-864P table in force from 1 March 2026, a sponsor in the 48 contiguous states needs $27,050 for a household of two, $41,250 for a household of four, and $7,100 more for each additional person. Those are the 125% figures that apply to civilian sponsors.
Part 5 of the form adds seven items: the immigrants sponsored on this affidavit, the sponsor (always one), the sponsor's spouse, unmarried children under 21, anyone else claimed as a dependent on the last federal tax return, immigrants previously sponsored whose obligation has not ended, and any household member whose income is being used. No one is counted twice — which is why sponsoring a spouse gives a household of two, not three.
The calculator shows the gap rather than a verdict. A sponsor on $28,000 with a household of 3 is $6,150 a year short of $34,150 — $512.50 a month. That gap can be covered with assets, by counting a household member's income on Form I-864A, or with a joint sponsor who meets the requirement for their own household on their own.
Assets are counted at the shortfall multiplied by 5 in most cases, by 3 when the intending immigrant is the spouse of a U.S. citizen or the child of a U.S. citizen who has turned 18, and by 1 in the orphan case that acquires citizenship under INA 320. On the $6,150 gap above that is $18,450 at 3x, against $30,750 at 5x. Only net value counts — market value minus the liabilities against it — and only assets convertible to cash within a year.
Yes, for one specific case: a sponsor on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces (other than active duty for training) petitioning their own spouse or child is measured at 100% instead of 125% — $33,000 rather than $41,250 for a household of four. The Form I-864 Instructions say this does not extend to joint or substitute sponsors, while 8 CFR 213a.2(c)(2)(iv)(C)-(D) says it does; this calculator applies the reduction only to the petitioning sponsor and flags the conflict.
They do. For a household of four the 125% figure is $51,563 in Alaska and $47,438 in Hawaii, against $41,250 in the 48 contiguous states. USCIS applies the contiguous figures to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, even though the HHS guidelines themselves are not defined for those jurisdictions.
The one in effect when the intending immigrant filed the application for an immigrant visa or adjustment of status — 8 CFR 213a.2(c)(2)(ii)(C) — not the date the affidavit is signed and not today's date. The figures here cover applications filed between 1 March 2026 and 28 February 2027. If a request for evidence is issued more than a year after filing, sufficiency is re-tested against the guidelines in effect on the date of that request.
The underlying HHS poverty guidelines were published on 15 January 2026 and took effect for HHS programmes immediately, but 8 CFR 213a.1 has USCIS and consular posts start using new guidelines on the first day of the second month after publication. Between mid-January and the end of February, two tables are live at once and the older one is still the one an I-864 adjudicator applies.
