EU Blue Card Germany Salary Calculator (2026)
Check a German job offer against the 2026 EU Blue Card salary thresholds. If it falls short, see exactly how much is missing per year and per month — and what the threshold leaves in net pay.
Example: €48,000 gross per year, standard track
Applicable threshold
€50,700
Shortfall
€2,700
Gross needed per month
€4,225
Reduced threshold
€45,934.20
A gross salary of €48,000 falls €2,700 short of the €50,700 standard Blue Card threshold for 2026 — €225 a month — but already clears the €45,934.20 bar that applies in shortage occupations and within three years of graduating.

The contractually agreed annual gross from the offer, before tax and social contributions.
This salary is 2.700,00 € a year short of the applicable threshold — 225,00 € a month. Clearing it needs 4.225,00 € gross per month.
It does, however, already clear the reduced threshold of 45.934,20 € used for shortage occupations and recent graduates.
Applicable threshold
50.700,00 €
Shortfall
2.700,00 €
Gross needed per month
4.225,00 €
Net per month
2.605,50 €
Tax class I, no church tax
| Pension contribution ceiling | 101.400 € |
|---|---|
| Standard threshold | 50.700,00 € |
| Reduced threshold | 45.934,20 € |
- Thresholds are 50% and 45.3% of the 2026 pension contribution ceiling of EUR 101,400, so they change every 1 January.
- Gross salary means the contractually agreed annual gross. Whether variable pay counts is assessed case by case by the authorities.

Germany's EU Blue Card requires a gross salary of €50,700 a year in 2026 — €4,225 a month.
That bar is not a round number by accident: §18g of the German Residence Act sets it at 50% of the annual pension contribution ceiling, which is €101,400 for 2026 — so the Blue Card threshold moves every 1 January.
In shortage occupations, and for applicants whose degree was awarded within the previous three years, the 2026 bar drops to €45,934.20 — 45.3% of the same ceiling, or €4,765.80 a year below the standard threshold.
A salary exactly at the €50,700 standard threshold leaves about €2,725.90 a month in hand for a single employee with no church tax — roughly 65% of gross after German income tax and social contributions.
Someone earning €48,000 is €2,700 a year short of the standard Blue Card threshold — €225 a month — but that same salary already clears the €45,934.20 bar used for shortage occupations and recent graduates.
How the threshold is calculated
The EU Blue Card salary bar is defined in §18g of the German Residence Act as a share of the annual contribution ceiling of the general pension insurance — the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze. For 2026 that ceiling is €101,400, so the standard threshold is 50% of it (€50,700) and the reduced threshold is 45.3% (€45,934.20).
Because the ceiling is re-set by ordinance every year with effect from 1 January, both thresholds move annually. That is the single most common reason published figures go stale: a page quoting last year's euro amount is wrong from New Year's Day, whereas deriving the amount from the current ceiling stays correct.
The reduced threshold covers the shortage-occupation groups listed in §18g Abs. 2 and applicants whose degree was awarded no more than three years before the application. Both require approval from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit. Whether a particular role belongs to a listed group is a decision for the authorities.
The net figure shown alongside the threshold uses the site's German payroll engine for a single employee in tax class I with no church tax, so it is a neutral reference point rather than a personal calculation — your own net depends on tax class, church membership, children and health-insurance choice.

Frequently asked questions
What salary do you need for an EU Blue Card in Germany in 2026?
€50,700 gross per year — €4,225 a month — on the standard track. In a shortage occupation, or within three years of finishing your degree, the threshold is €45,934.20, and the Bundesagentur für Arbeit has to approve it.
Why is the threshold such an odd number?
Because it is a percentage, not a round figure. §18g of the Residence Act sets the standard bar at 50% and the reduced bar at 45.3% of the pension contribution ceiling, which is €101,400 for 2026. Both figures follow automatically from that one number.
Does the threshold change every year?
Yes. The pension contribution ceiling is re-set by ordinance each year with effect from 1 January, and the Blue Card thresholds move with it. A salary that clears the bar in December can fall short in January, which is why offers agreed late in the year are worth re-checking.
Is it gross or net salary?
Gross. The comparison is against contractually agreed annual gross pay. For context, a salary exactly at the €50,700 standard threshold leaves roughly €2,725.90 a month net for a single employee with no church tax.
What counts as a shortage occupation?
The reduced threshold applies to occupation groups listed in §18g Abs. 2 — including many STEM, IT, engineering, medical and certain managerial roles — and to applicants who completed their degree within the previous three years. Whether a specific role falls inside a listed group is decided by the authorities, not by this calculator.
Do bonuses and variable pay count towards the threshold?
The assessment is based on the agreed annual gross salary. How guaranteed bonuses, 13th-month payments or variable components are treated is assessed case by case by the immigration authority, so this calculator compares base gross only.
What happens if the salary is just below the bar?
The calculator shows the exact gap rather than a pass/fail. Someone on €48,000 is €2,700 a year short of the standard threshold — €225 a month — while already clearing the €45,934.20 bar that applies to shortage occupations and recent graduates.
